A Sanction for Christmas

In November 2017 my health was at an all time low, so low in fact I had to spend some time on hospital. Those few weeks were very stressful for me because all I could think about was how being in hospital would effect my universal credit. Instead of worrying about my own health, I was terrified of the punishment I would receive for not doing my jobsearch or not attending an appointment.
I had informed the job centre of my situation and followed all the rules of taking a 'sick day' but it didn't matter. On the day that I got home from hospital I found the dreaded brown envelope from universal credit, informing me that I had been sanctioned.
My sanction started in December just before christmas, like it wasn't bad enough I was spending Christmas alone I now had to survive on even less money than usual.
The first thing I did was try to cut any unnecessary expenses, I cancelled my Netflix subscription and limited myself to only buying things that I absolutely could not go without.
I applied for a hardship payment, which is a loan you can apply for when you have been sanctioned but have to payback in installments when the sanction ends.
I went to the scheduled appointment to complete my hardship payment application and filled out the relevant form. You basically have to prove tpu are starving and that you deserve the money. You have to show them that your bank account is empty and practically beg for their help and even though you can't afford to eat on a daily basis you have to be able to show them you are still doing your job search. They then look it all over, make a yes or no decision and let you know a few hours later with a phone call. Luckily I proved myself worthy and was granted a payment of £140 which had to last me the whole month.
I used the money to pay for priorities. I used some to pay a little bit of rent even though it wasn't enough to pay it in full I had to be able to give something to keep a roof over my head. I made sure I had some food, shampoo and soap which would all be used sparingly throughout the month. I then had to choose between having electric, so I could cook the food I had or having gas for heating. You may remember December was the time we had the really bad snow and cold weather, and although I was freezing and as much as I wanted to be warm I chose to eat instead.
The sanction lasted 5 months and finally ended in April. For those 5 months I barely managed. I wasn't eating I prepared one small 'meal a day and ate it in small portions through out the whole day to try and keep from going hungry. I only used electric for cooking and tried to sleep before it got dark so I didn't have to use the lights and I couldn't afford gas so I wore extra clothes when it got cold and tried to get through it.
Now that the sanction has ended I have to pay back the several hardship payments that I used to get by, meaning even now I have less money and struggling more than ever.
I'll keep you all updated and as always thankyou for reading.
